If you don’t want to commit to regular lessons or be told ‘how things should be done’ but if you are willing to practise the violin, these violin video lessons are for you! Join in with your instrument while you watch. The learner’s needs are always at the centre of each video. The downloadable violin videos on this page are arranged by playing level: green for beginners, blue for intermediate players and orange for advanced violinists or viola players. Matching repertoire can be found on the Repertoire Lists page.

 

The aim of these exercises is to become relaxed and flexible, which can be achieved only when muscles are strong and have been allowed time to grow strong. Therefore, please practise all exercises regularly and for a number of weeks so that they become effective. If at any time you feel tired or if you are in pain, please stop and try again at a later stage and for shorter periods of time. Have fun practising!

Vibrato - Pro-Am Stings Tutorial

Vibrato – Duration 8.39 min

This tutorial shows the teaching of an arm vibrato. It starts with preliminary exercises for a relaxed left arm and goes on to analyse how fingers move during vibrato. The video shows slow motion footage of finger joints and finger tips, which gives a clear insight into how you can improve your own vibrato, regardless of whether you are new to playing with vibrato or whether your vibrato is already established. Start with your instrument only and try vibrato with the bow towards the end of the tutorial.

Unobtrusive changing of position is an essential element in good violin/viola playing. This tutorial explains clearly how smooth shifting can be achieved. There are exercises for shifting from the first position up to the eighth position, as well as suggestions for practising position changing using different fingers.
